What the GA Pilots Needs To Know

Summary - Come and hear the one of the authors of the definitive book on Performance Based Navigation talk about PBN and what it means for the GA pilot flying IFR in Europe. EASA now requires that pilots have a level of theoretical and practical knowledge. In response to this need, PPL/IR Europe has produced The PBN Manual which is widely used right across Europe as the standard reference. Timothy Nathan, the senior author and an experienced Instrument Rating Instructor, will share his special understanding of how this applies to the world of general aviation. PBN procedures will become an ever increasing part of the IFR experience so don’t miss this opportunity to get yourself right up to date.

Flying PBN - Practical Experience for the GA Pilot

Summary - Paul Sherry is a long standing member of PPL/IR Europe and a qualified Instrument Rating Instructor. Complementary to our daily lectures on the knowledge base underpinning Performance Based Navigation, this lecture covers some to the practicalities of an IFR flight employing all aspects of PBN. Follow us through on a flight from Friedrichshafen (EDNY) to Innsbruck (LOWI). We start with the planning aspects of the route (using online IFR routing tools), through a PBN departure from EDNY to the RNAV arrival and LPV approach at LOWI. How does EASA Part NCO guide us in our flight? Come and find out. We also discuss ‘tips and tricks’ to make your PBN experience easier, as well as covering some pitfalls which may perhaps catch out those with lesser experience.

Single Lever Power Control for Rotax 912iS and 915iS engines

Traditional, engine cockpit controls for aircrafts equipped with constant speed propellers consist of power, propeller and mixture levers (3-lever control). The BRP-Powertrain Rotax engines eliminated the need for the manual mixture control, which is for example on the 912iS and 915iS automatically carried out by the Engine Control Unit (ECU). “Single Lever Power Control” (SLPC) eliminates the need for manual RPM control. The electro-hydraulic constant speed governor gets fully automatic controlled by the engine management system. This results in an optimal set of the RPM during all phases of flight while reducing the pilot's workload and minimizing the fuel consumption.

Challenges of adapting a flight test instrumentation to helicopter flight testing

For helicopter flight testing - independent of the purpose of the campaign - it is often needed to record data with the help of a flight test instrumentation. An adaption of the equipment to the specific helicopter types and purpose of flight test is needed though. Our experiences and methods from planning through design and installation of the flight test equipment on different helicopters are topic of this presentation.

The Magic of IFR, Past, Present and Future

Summary - Instrument flying capability has always opened up some magical flying opportunities for private pilots.  But the world of flying under Instrument Flight Rules has changed over the last couple of decades, and will continue to change in the face of changing technology, regulation and infrastructure. Come and listen to Julian Scarfe and Colin Williamson tell the story of how IFR has changed over the course of their flying careers, and take a glimpse at the future of IFR.  You'll find out why there has never been a better time to start IFR flying as a private pilot.
