Background
Since 1988, the town of Ulm has been awarding the Berblinger Prize as a tribute to the work of Albrecht Ludwig Berblinger, the “Tailor of Ulm”, and his attempt to fly across the Danube in a hang-glider he had designed and constructed himself. This visionary, boffin and inventor failed – not because of any shortcomings in his construction but owing to a lack of knowledge of the thermics above the surface of the cold river.
This prize is awarded for special efforts, developments and innovative ideas in the construction of aircraft in the field of general aviation, whereby the focus of interest is on safety, environmental sustainability, aerodynamics, construction design and economy.
In the framework of the competition practicable, environmentally friendly and resource-saving aircraft from all over the world will be presented to the public. The purpose of the invitation for submissions is to demonstrate “flying using innovative technologies” on the basis of the latest research results, knowledge and developments in the field of aviation. The organizer of the competition is looking for practicable aircraft capable of carrying one or more people using promising and innovative technology with respect to construction and/or propulsion. Special emphasis should also be placed on environmental sustainability, economy and safety. Aircraft in the sense of this competition may also be ultralight aircraft.
An independent jury, members of the jury are representatives from the aviation and space industry, from universities and research institutions and representatives of the town of Ulm, will judge the aircraft participating in the competition.
Construction teams working with innovative and environmentally sustainable technologies are invited from all over the world to take part and register their aircraft. Prize money of 100,000 € will be awarded to the winner, one of the highest value prizes in the field of general aviation, as a tribute to his work.
